Seeds and nuts are prepared for processing. Groundnut, mustard, sesame, sunflower, cottonseed and copra are cleaned of dust, stones and husk, then conditioned to the right moisture so they press evenly.

The expeller or screw press applies controlled mechanical pressure to extract oil. A rotating worm shaft pushes the seed through a cage of steel bars, building pressure until the oil is squeezed out.

Oil is separated from the pressed solid material, producing oil cake as a by-product. The oil drains out between the cage bars, while firm, dry cake leaves the end of the press.

The extracted oil passes through a filter press to remove impurities. Filter cloth between the plates holds back fine seed particles and lets bright, clear oil through.
